  • This might be a tough pill to swallow… but, your doctor may have inadvertently prescribed a medication that caused your sudden weight gain. There are many prescription drugs which can cause rapid weight gain. Medicines that are used to treat seizures, migraines, depression, high blood pressure, mood disorders, and even diabetes can cause weight gains of up to 20 pounds in a month. Here are just a handful:

    * Cardura (for treating high blood pressure)
    * Inderal (another for treating high blood pressure)
    * Paxil (antidepressant)
    * Zoloft (antidepressant)
    * Elavinl (antidepressant)
    * Tofranil (antidepressant)
    * Prednisone (steroid to treat inflammation-related conditions )
    * Zyprexa (antipsychotic)
    * Depakote (used to treat seizures)
    * Diabeta (used to treat Diabeties)
    * Biabinese (also used to treat Diabetes)

    What makes it even more confusing is the fact that a few medications, such as Prevacid and Nexium (both taken for heartburn), can cause weight for some people… and then weight loss for others.

    If you suspect this to be the case, please do not stop taking these medicines. Simply talk to your doctor and express your concern. Some medicines simply do not react well with some people, and your doctor may have an alternative medication that you can try.
