'Oops!...I Did It Again' Music Video Premieres
One of Britney Spears' most iconic music videos premiered on April 10, 2000; a video that is forever ingrained into the minds of fans worldwide, thanks to killer dance moves and a red latex catsuit. "Oops!...I Did It Again" was the first single off Britney's second album, and the video was filmed March 17-18 at Universal City, CA, and directed by Nigel Dick, the man behind the "...Baby One More Time," "Sometimes" and "(You Drive Me) Crazy" videos.
"This ['Oops!' video concept] was my idea," Britney told MTV in 2000. "I was like, 'I want to be on Mars, dancing on Mars.' It's really futuristic. It's going to be the first video that I've done to have a lot of special effects. I think it's more mature. It's edgier. It's funkier. It's fun."
The flips in the space-age video were also all Britney, who wore a harness underneath her red suit; she did admit being scared at first. Britney also suffered a freak accident on set during the two-day video shoot, when a camera fell on her head while filming an overhead shot. She was knocked out, but received four stitches and quickly recovered.
As for the famous red latex catsuit, director Nigel Dick recalls in a 2009 interview with MTV that Britney fought hard to wear it. "'I want to be in a red jumpsuit. I want to have a really cute spaceman, but there can't be any rockets,'" he said, recalling Britney's request. "There was another catsuit, actually, which was fantastic, which I loved, and the night before, I was told that Britney hired this guy that worked with Michael Jackson. And so that's the catsuit." The latex outfit reportedly generated so much heat, that sweat literally dripped off it with every twirl or flick of Britney's wrist.
Four days after debuting on MTV's Making the Video, "Oops!...I Did It Again" hit the top spot on Total Request Live, where it remained in the Top 10 for 66 days until it retired in July 2000.
